I know this has been mentioned in a few threads, but I got my hands on this last week and thought more people should know about it. If you haven't heard of it, it's essentially the only HD version of the original theatrical trilogy, put together from various sources by multiple insanely talented message board fans. Anyway, I'd recommend being resourceful and tracking this down online.
It is amazing and is the only way the original trilogy should be viewed. It's astounding how much George Lucas fricked things up after.
Quote:Please tell me more about how background CGI, Greedo shooting first, and Darth Vader screaming no have ruined your child hood.I never said he ruined my childhood, he just ruined his movies. The CGI/color corrections ruined the viewing experience of Star Wars.
It's completely out of place, and instead of seeing what made Star Wars groundbreaking in 1977, you see ordinary 90's cgi that you saw in hundreds of other movies. Watch the Despecialized edition and tell me anything that looked like this before or after. It would be like your favorite classic band re-releasing your favorite record, but with all of the vocals autuned, giving it that pop-country/t-pain shine.only they just call it the same thing and destroy all of the originals so no one new can hear them. What made Star Wars special in 1977 is debatable.
I would say it was the soundtrack, the memorable characters, and the lighthearted and adventurous tone of the film. The special effects were impressive in 1977, but 38 years later, I don't mind the majority of the changes especially the ancillary ones such as the additions to the Yavin 4 X-wing takeoff, arriving in Mos Espa, etc. There are other alterations that I would have preferred they not have made such as the scene with Greedo or adding dialogue for Darth Vader right before he grabs the Emperor to throw him down the air shaft, but none of this ruins the movies for me.
Great remake of the originalsIt's wonderful to have these remakes of the original theatrical releases. Though they are not 100% accurate to the original theatrical release because the creator did not have access to the original negatives, they are excellent. Greedo does not shoot, there is no Jabba at the Millennium Falcon, none of the 'special edition' add ons are to be seen anywhere in any of the three movies. Frankly, seeing these as they were 40 years ago is an eye-opener. The visual effects back then were many years ahead of their time.
The flight through the trench looks fantastic, for example. These discs I bought are in 720p, they are neatly packaged, with nice artwork on the discs and in the cases. Very clean product, with a menu and extras content.
Well worth it, takes me back to my childhood,Verified purchase: Yes Condition: New.
I mean, before Despecialized, if you wanted the non SE editions, it was either Laserdisc rips or the 2008 bonus discs which were just sourced from the Laserdisc master tapes. These were fine on 4x3 crts, but looked really bad on HD televisions. Then came Puggo’s 16mm set, but the prints were faded, beat up and the capture was done on DV.Despecialized gave us the OT in higher quality and Harmy kept making improvements to his projects over the years when new sources became available. As we speak, he’s working on Despecialized 3.0 with 4k77 as his main source for OT shots. They scanned Technicolor prints which were made by printing the individual colour layers one on top of the other using dyes. If the registration of the printing matrices was even a tiny bit out there would be colour fringing. That is probably what you are seeing.Because they used dyes, which were far more stable than standard printing stock, they don't really fade.
But they have a different look to standard prints. Only a few Technicolor prints were made as the process was mostly discontinued in the early '70s. By '77 the only lab making them was Technicolor's London facility. Which is why most prints, on Eastman or Fuji stock, are faded to a lovely pink hue. There were no Technicolor prints of Empire and most of them are faded.
By '83 low fade stock was available so Jedi prints are usually okay. The grain is actually stronger here than it would have been projected in the cinema as you are essentially looking at the print itself rather than the shadows it casts on the screen. You lose resolution in the projection process due to optical imperfections and the fact the film is moving through the projector at 1 1/2 feet per second, mitigating the grain. Some projectionists would defocus slightly on really grainy films.

If you didn't already know, Harmy's Despecialized Star Wars is a project that is trying to restore a cut of the original theatrical version before any changes were made; that includes changes that happened before the Special Editions came out in 1997. One of the most obvious examples of a change before the Special Edition was the calling it Episode 4 which was changed after the original release to match up with Empire being Episode 5.
Harmy has gone through a lot of effort from multiple sources to pull together a cut that replicates this and was looked upon as the best version to get if you wanted an original theatrical cut.It looks like there may be a new king in town called the 4K77 edition. This version was scanned frame by frame from multiple film reels, cleaned up, and redone color timing to restore an original theatrical cut. To do so, it took 21 TB of storage to store every frame of the film uncompressed at about 100 MB per frame. Some of the advantages of this cut is unlike Harmy's version being limited to 720p due to trying not to upscale some of the sources too dramatically despite a large portion being from the Blu Ray, this version has been released in both 4K and 1080p.
Another thing that is different is the Blu Ray had DNR applied to it to clean up the image where as this scan retains the film grain in the picture. This might be jarring to some since the DNR was actually fairly well done IMO on Star Wars, but usually DNR will result in a loss of detail. The 4K version is encoded with x265 and comes in at about 83 GB while the 1080p version uses x264 and comes in at around 37 GB. There looks to be a DNR version coming out in the future as well as they seem to be experimenting with trying to encode a version with HDR.Here are some sample scenes, although they may have improved since some of these are over a year old. Here's a third one of the ending ceremony scene since apparently you can only embed two videos. Here are a couple of the original TV spots that they recreated with their scan but using the original audio from the TV spot. For more information you can find it here. RotJ's original flow is SO different from the SE. I cringe every time I see it on TV or Blu-Ray. This is the only one of the OT that I refuse to watch in any form but the original. The ONLY one.
I can deal with ANH. I don't care much about what was done to Empire; those changes were legitimately minor.

It basically becomes a totally different movie, and it's inferior in every way. It's already the weakest of the trilogy IMO, it doesn't need to be kicked down another peg or two.
Or five if we're watching the 2011 cut. ANH bad changes:1. CGI creatures right in the middle of the frame in Tatooine2. CGI rocks blocking in R23. Jabba scene4. Replacing puppet monsters with CGI in Cantina5.
